I've seen lots of people doing 2021 interiors tren

I've seen lots of people doing 2021 interiors trend predictions, so I'm not going to do that. If I was any good at predicting things I'd have won Lotto by now.

Instead, I'm giving you my "Totally Unsolicited Top 5 List of Things I Like and Think Should Be Trends But Probably Won't Ever Take Off". I'm determined to make each of these a thing in 2021! And remember, if they do catch on - you heard it here first.

1. Burnt orange and sage green. Together. If this colour combo isn't seared into your eyeballs by the end of 2021, I've probably overestimated my influencing skills.

2. Embroidery. Everything embroidered is going to be hot in 2021, mark my words! I might even finish the Frida Kahlo cross-stitch I started in lockdown last year.

3. Paint by numbers. Although it took me 6+ months to complete one of my own, I still like them. If searches for paint by numbers on Trademe haven't tripled by the end of the year, I've definitely overestimated my influencing skills.

4. Bow ties on dogs. I know this isn't interiors related, but Morris made me include it. He's been rocking a bow tie since 2020, so please help a dog out and spread the word that #dapperdogsaredope

5. Eclectic granny decor. If you love a good doily, this is the trend for you #bringbackthedoily

Mr @home.squared has had his eyes on one of these furry beasties (the beanbag, not Morris 🐶) for a while and when he suggested a seat of some sort for this corner of the plant room/office I thought it would be perfect... if only the price tag wasn't super $$$ 🙄

So after some extensive googling, I found a local supplier who was selling them online for about half the price they go for in the shops. I'll take 50% off and free shipping any day, so of course I snapped one up! The only problem is, I think Mr @home.squared will have to fight Morris for it 😂

Remember that time in March last year when the whole world went into lockdown and we all seized the opportunity to try out new crafts or hobbies which we'd never had time for before? In a fit of lockdown madness, I decided I'd like to paint something (not a wall but a proper painting), and ordered a paint-by-numbers kit online.

By the time it arrived 2 months after lockdown had finished, the urge to paint something was as distant a memory as lockdown itself. So I did what any self respecting budding artist would do, and stashed it away in the spare room.

A couple of months later I decided to finally pick up the paint brushes, and it soon became obvious that I'd chosen the hardest paint-by-numbers in the world 🤦🏼‍♀️

But I was determined not to let it defeat me and resolved to finish it by the end of the year, as a sort of symbol of the shit-show that was 2020. And I did it, with only a few hours to spare before the end of the year!

Let's just say that like 2020, this 'masterpiece' is best viewed from a distance 😂

I haven't bothered decorating for Christmas the last few years, but this year I even broke my own rule and put up some decorations before the first of December. Clearly this year has affected me in ways I never thought possible 🤪

Our living room is quite long, and I'm short sighted so the TV needs to be of a goodly size. No huddling round a laptop or tablet screen around here!

After NZ lost so many of its favourite home-grown magazines earlier this year, I was genuinely excited to hear that new kid on the block @havenmagnz was launching this week. I've already devoured my copy from cover to cover and can confirm it's well worth a read. I loved seeing so many quirky and colorful kiwi homes featured! 🧡

I distinctly remember when Mr @home.squared first suggested we should get a houseplant - I was vehemently opposed. I don't remember why, but in my opinion houseplants were super not cool. I now humbly admit how wrong I was 😂

Anyway, I agreed to one plant - a fern - which I begrudgingly took care of like the pet that your kids begged you for and promised they'd feed and exercise but never do. Slowly, that fern began to grow on me (excuse the pun) and when it didn't die despite my tendency to overwater, I started to think I might like a few more plants around the house.

Many casualties ensued (the Boston fern in this pic was very nearly one of them) but over the last 5 or so years my collection has grown to the point our house is starting to resemble a proper jungle. And I love it! 💚💚💚

I was a bit nervous about posting my last post, but it seems to have struck a chord with quite a lot of people. A few people decided it was time for them to leave, but they clearly weren't my people anyway 😉 If you're still here, thanks for sticking around!

If I can do one thing with this platform, I hope it's to inspire others to have the confidence to embrace their own individual style, and not to blindly follow trends because it's what all the "cool kids" are doing on Instagram.

Sure, you can go and grab the latest "must have" decor item from Kmart, but I can guarantee that after a week or two it will blend into the background and you'll barely even notice it anymore. But it's the random piece that you unexpectedly find on a road trip and nearly have to leave a kid (or two) behind to fit it in the car, that will continue to put a smile on your face whenever you walk in the room.

It might take longer to find pieces that are truly your style, but you're more likely to keep the things you really love for a longer time too. Your spaces will evolve with you and ultimately you'll have a home that's uniquely "you" 🧡
